Encountering the Other | Marianne Rouche

Encountering the Other proposes a series of site specific performative actions, the common premise of which is to act as gentle disruptions in space and time. I am interested in investigating what happens in those moments, or, what can emerge from the space that is left open. In creating sensorial situations which depart from everyday modes of being, I investigate the possibilities of encountering one’s Self and the Other.

Encountering the Other calls to attention what is here and now, in the space, with the people around us and within ourselves. The project seeks to question the micro gestures in meaning making, and combat the strict functionalism of spaces so that the city itself becomes a real, yet imaginative space of play. Furthermore, in the current context of a global pandemic, this work takes on another meaning, asking how we can interact and relate to one another while being kept/ keeping at a distance from another.”

The real power of site-specific work is that it somehow activates, or engages with, the narratives of the site in some kind of way. (Pearson)
